Why Vegetarian? Pt. 2

When I thought about changing my diet to vegetarian I did quite a bit of research. I wanted a healthy change but I needed it to be balanced because I was (and still am) exclusively breastfeeding. Side note: Oy to the breastfeeding! Some loose the babyweight right away from nursing. Others do not. I was one of those who breastfeed and am hungry/thirsty all.the.time. No super fast nursing weight loss for this mama!! Anyway, I wanted a diet that was nutritionally sound for my health and for my baby’s health. Plus, I didnt just want to drop lbs for the short-term, I wanted something that would be long-lasting. Ive done fad diets (Atkins, Weight Watchers) in the past and they never were for me, only short-term success. I have a few friends and every time I talk to them they are talking about being on such-and-such fad diet. Its like their flavor of the week. Ill ask how its going for them (hoping for a success story for some encouragement) and they’ll make an excuse as to why they are no longer doing that thing and have moved onto the next thing. …I use to be one of those people too… Did you know that approx 45 million Americans diet each year and spend $33 billion on weight-loss products. Yet, nearly two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese. Something doesnt add up there. We are spending gobs and gobs of money to lose weight, with no success! So, whats the answer?

After my research I decided going veg was for me. Not as a ‘diet’ but a whole new way of looking at foods. Hippocrates (the founding father medicine) said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Wow. Just think about that statement for a sec. How many of us live to eat instead of eating to live? Sure, enjoy your tasty food! 🙂 I looove cookies! But I can enjoy 1 cookie, I dont have to stuff my face full of them. Lol! The Lord gave us so many beautiful and delish veggies, fruits, grains, beans.. to enjoy. In moderation! But now, most of America is raging out of control.

Some facts for ya:

  • Almost 1 in 5 FOUR years are  considered to be obese
  • 61% of overweight 5-10 year olds already have at least one risk factor for heart disease, and 26% have two or more risk factors.
  • Less than 25% of adolescents eat the recommended five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
  • 1 in 3 people born today will develop diabetes in their lifetime
  • Only about 25% of U.S. adults eat the recommended five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
  • Obesity-related  conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of  cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death.

Do you want your children’s generation to be the first ever whose life expectancy is less than their parents? For my family, this problem ends with me! I will not teach my children my unhealthy habits. The Lord has blessed me with 2 beautiful children.. As a parent its my job to protect them and guide them. What a poor job I would be doing if I lead them down the wrong path!

Whats the solution to all of these serious health problems?

  • Diet pills? No.
  • Fad diets? No.
  • Starvation? No.
  • In-action? No.
  • Day-dreaming? No.
  • Ignorance? NO!

Cut The Crap!

Some of my very smart vegan friends pointed me towards a video called Forks over Knives. Its a film that details how greatly cutting back on refined, processed foods, and animal products will reduce (and even reverse) today’s health problems. A plant base, whole foods diet is where its at! All the cool people eat like herbivores. 🙂 You can find it on Netflix, if you have stream. Hulu also has it, fo FREE, @!watch/279734 For.real. Check it out. Do it! (After you finish reading this blog, of course. 😀 Lol)

Ive come to the conclusion that being a vegetarian is for me. Either you are on board with being healthy or you are not. Go do your own research and come to your own conclusions about whats best for you, your body, and your family. If you are already steps ahead of me & do live a healthy life, fantastic!!! But for those that are behind me… yall talk about loosing weight/getting healthy all the time! But how bad do you really want it?

Im a quarter of a century old. Ive waisted more then 1/4 of my life… from here on out, Im not wasting another second!

You’ll reach your goals, I have no doubt. Stay committed. Set realistic goals. Have a mentor or someone who will help motivate you !
